Major stages in the development of theatre will be explored. Key plays and the relevance of them to modern day life will be discussed. Neville Bullard worked as a Theatre Studies and Drama educator for 35 years in secondary schools. He has produced and directed over seventy-five concerts and theatrical productions since 1980. During that time he was also an Examiner for the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority in Theatre Studies and Drama, and he continues to do this. Neville is currently employed by the University of Melbourne in their Graduate School of Education training Pre-Service Teachers. Session 1 • Introduction to the concept of Theatre • Actors, Costume, Stage and the Circle • The beginning: Primitive Theatre and Ritual Session 2 • Acting and Scripting • Greek and Roman Theatre Session 3 • The Rise of Christianity • Medieval Theatre Session 4 • Touring Companies: Commedia D’ell Arte Session 5 • Elizabethan Theatre • Shakespeare and the Globe Session 6 • Noh, Bunraku and Kabuki Session 7 • Melodrama and Vaudeville • Stock Characters, Predictable Plots and Cliffhangers Session 8 • Esoteric Theatre and Contemporary Practitioners Note 1: After the learning component in each class is completed, there is a social component where people can chat and get to know one another over a drink. Note 2: Participants will be asked when the course has concluded whether they would like to form a group that goes to some regional and Melbourne theatrical shows together. There will be no pressure for individuals to do this, but it will be an option.
